Securing the Power Supply to Nuuk
AF Elkraft plays a key role in the effort to ensure a stable and future ready power supply to Nuuk in Greenland.

About the project
The capital depends on reliable electricity for households, critical societal functions, and continued urban development. Power transmission takes place via the Ameralik Span, the world’s longest fjord crossing for overhead power lines, which spans the Ameralik Fjord approximately 30 kilometers from Nuuk.

Hydropower replaced diesel
The Ameralik Span was established in 1993 as part of a 132 kV transmission line from the Buksefjord hydropower plant. This made it possible for Nuuk to disconnect the diesel generators that had previously supplied the city with electricity. The span measures 5,376 meters in length and hangs up to 128 meters above the fjord. The structure consists of four conductors, three phases and one reserve. Operational experience in a demanding Arctic climate, combined with incidents in recent years, has demonstrated the importance of continuous upgrades and high technical quality.
AF Elkraft is now engaged in installing a new reserve phase conductor across the span. The work involves replacing one conductor with modern technology that improves operational reliability and reduces the risk of power outages. The new cable weighs significantly less than the existing solution, but the installation requires extensive planning, strict safety measures, and high precision. All transport and movement in the area is carried out by boat and helicopter, as there is no road infrastructure.
Nukissiorfiit
The project is being executed in close cooperation with the client Nukissiorfiit and a number of specialized subcontractors. Deliveries include power cables, damping systems, insulators, steel components, and installation equipment. AF Elkraft is responsible for coordinating deliveries, inspecting existing structures, and carrying out the installation work. Safety is the highest priority in all phases, both for personnel and for the facility that is critical to Nuuk’s power supply.
With extensive experience in transmission line construction in Greenland and strong local expertise, the project contributes to securing stable energy supply to the capital in the years ahead. The work on the Ameralik Span is a clear example of how technical competence, thorough preparations, and close cooperation between stakeholders are essential for success under extreme conditions.
