Demolition and environmental clean-up of two large electrolysis halls, in connection with the expansion of SU 4.
The halls had a size of approx. 45 x 500 m, containing together a total of 300 electrolysis furnaces, were torn down selectively. The EE waste as well as other environmentally hazardous substances were dismantled manually, before the demolition machinery was brought in. All PAH-contaminated dust was removed from the structures before the demolition could start. The material of the furnaces (approx. 15,000 tons) was contaminated and was transported to Langøya for deposition. Reinforcement was separated from the concrete, which was crushed to a 0-200 mm fraction and recycled.
