The IKEA store at Slependen is undergoing a renovation and expansion. Step 1 of the new store, which was built around the existing store, was completed in 2006. In order to carry out steps 2 and 3, the original store and warehouse needed to be demolished.
Selective demolition of department store and warehouse
AF Decom was awarded the demolition contract as a subcontract. The demolition work took place in two stages. The store was torn down in the summer of 2006 and the warehouse in the summer of 2007. The area being demolished bordered directly on customer areas and required that a substantial focus be placed on the safety of both the customers and the employees. The design of the store primarily involved prefabricated concrete elements (hollow core slabs, Double-T beams). AF Decom made a detailed demolition plan for the execution of the demolition work. Stability computations were carried out for the existing structures, as well as the requisite reinforcements being made. Furthermore, a detailed STAAD.Pro model was made for the stepwise execution of the demolition sequences. Parts of the demolition task were performed at night, in order to minimise the risk of undesirable events.
The demolition was completed as planned and without any serious incidents.
